s
he tried to warn him
of the company you keep
especially the ones who be
r u n n i n g the streets
experiencing loss of          life
and others loss of          sleep
but he’s in too

deep

to try to convince
the only remedy for him
is consequence
because he knows
like his boxers EXPOSED
how disgusting it looks
a little too late
because now he’s being booked
for m u l t i p l e charges
but…
she tried to warn him
that he was a          moving target
with a limited margin of error
hate to be the bearer of bad news
but he refused to listen
much less pay attention
because the symptoms have stripped
his unresponsive emotions
and methodically pimped
his impressionable devotion
to his so-call friends
who he proudly defends
but it’s death he’s facing
while they’re facing probation
but he’s still clueless and torn
and still her first born
but…
she tried to warn him
that everybody aint your friend
and sometimes it depends
on what’s in it for them
unmarked dividends can’t be traced
so he’s unaware that he’s only
buying space to be placed
within their circle slightly disturbing
because he’s more deserving
than the victim role
naïve soul couldn’t heed her warnings
so now he has no control
as the trial now takes its toll on her
reinforcing her reality
that she’s been battling for years
familiar tears cascading and saturating her blouse
as her thoughts now SPEAK out LOUD
trying to silence the crowd
and public opinion while the public defender
appears to

throw in the towel

even “flashing” a smile
still proud but not afraid
as her son prepares to be locked in the cage
but his lawyer is still getting paid
no matter the verdict
she’s dreamt it before:
armed robbery / attempted murder
but…
she tried to warn him
